material convergence

the convergence of solar cells, computer chips, and LED lighting is now possible. after applying this new material into solar cells in the lab, the engineers at Ohio State U converted light into electricity at 17% efficiency (whatever that means) and created LEDs on silicon substrates comparable to the current versions of the super bright LEDs. [via] Because III-V materials absorb and emit light much more efficiently than silicon, these materials could bridge the gap between traditional silicon computer chips and light-related technologies, such as lasers, displays, and fiber optics. |
