first there was text, then images, then movies, now touch. CBS reports on virtual reality and touch. the playstation 2 game Rez comes with a "trance vibrator." it's a "music shooting" game....uh huh. or you can just get the vibrating mouse which is sound-triggered. at a Siggraph event a few years ago, i tried out a mouse developed by either SensAble or Immersion that could translate the feeling of various textured materials mainly through variations in vibrations. though it was very early in development, i still don't believe that you can mimic the real feeling of a texture through vibration/hardware unless it's wired into our brains. it's just way too hard to simulate what the biggest organ in our body - our skin - can do.
