the convergence of solar cells, computer chips, and LED lighting is now possible. after applying this new material into solar cells in the lab, the engineers at Ohio State U converted light into electricity at 17% efficiency (whatever that means) and created LEDs on silicon substrates comparable to the current versions of the super bright LEDs. Because III-V materials absorb and emit light much more efficiently than silicon, these materials could bridge the gap between traditional silicon computer chips and light-related technologies, such as lasers, displays, and fiber optics.
